Title: ‘New Trees and Old’
Description: A 19th century regimental silver table centre surrounded by a layer cake modelled in the form of a view of the land around Burnley, taken from a ‘Pride of Burnley’ photographic competition entry by Angela Grimes.
Rationale: Burnley is as much a rural as a post-industrial place. It is still scaled to the surrounding landscape: fields and hills are only a couple of miles from any street in town. Part of the reason for this was the type and period Burnley’s industrialisation. Lead and coal were only ever extracted here in comparatively small quantities, whilst weaving was space-efficient, even at the height of production. Consequently, the town feels comfortable in it’s location. Its outlying villages retain direct traces of older histories whilst its hills and valleys remain beautiful: destinations for contemporary leisure pursuits. ‘New Trees and Old’ appears to embed a 19th century fantasy tree from the Towneley collections (made as part of the social/ceremonial kit of the Lancashire Regiment) in a new physical representation of the landscape. The cake both suggests the strata of the Namurian coal-bearing geology of Burnley and provides a startling new image of the countryside, re-articulating the relationship between Crown Hill and the popular new ‘Singing Ringing Tree’ sculpture.

‘Parker Lane Hearing’
A wooden ear from an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, with a three dimensional, gilded wrought iron support by Rourke.
Parker Lane is the site of Burnley’s Magistrates Court. The ancient wooden ear from the collection embodies ‘the person’ at the centre of the finely-made and immutable social structure of the law. It seems vulnerable. Its body is absent. ‘The person’ is a definition of responsibility in relation to the State, according to philosopher David Hume. ‘Personhood’ is a quantity to be retained, manipulated and used up, relative to the law. It carries with it a pathos that derives from the difference between this legal definition and our own experience of life, described by the different meanings of the word hearing: hearing is both subjective, lived experience and legally objectified adjudication. Wrought iron of the type made by Rourke has been used to signify this objectification for four hundred years. It is a commonplace of the visual language of the public structures of the law.

‘Victoria Apartments’
A nineteenth century classical bronze of a dancer upholstered with a crimson polyester satin quilt.
‘Victoria Apartments’ creates an image of a woman struggling to control a quilt, which comically undermines the gravitas of the neo-classical bronze dryad and re-affirms the bronze’s original function as a domestic object rather than a scholarly one. The relationship between the contemporary quilt and the nineteenth century statue reflects the relationship between old and new ideas of domestic luxury particular to post-industrial towns and cities, which are underwritten by regeneration and changes of use. Victoria Apartments is the new name of an old Mill in Padiham, where contemporary luxury apartments now recycle the physical shell of nineteenth century industry.

On the 13 Oct at 4.30pm, Stuart Haygarth and Simon Grennan from artist duo Grennan & Sperandio, will be giving artist talks, introduced by Emma Anderson, Manager of Renaissance North West. Event at the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington.

ReVisit is a series of creative commissions developed by Creativity Works that has invited artists and designers to look at the collections of museums and venues in Pennine Lancashire in a new way. Over the spring and summer of 2011, Haygarth, Grennan & Sperandio, Timorous Beasties and Adept worked with the collections of the Haworth Art Gallery, Towneley Hall, Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery, and the North West Sound Archive, respectively. Each brought their unique approach to the process to develop work that was unexpected, insightful and, in some cases, challenging. The artists will talk about their own practice and the experience of working on the ReVisit program.

Rossendale garden launch...

Lots of exciting things have been happening whilst I've been on my holidays. Last week saw the launch of the medicinal herb garden at Rossendale Museum. Over 150 braved the rain to come and celebrate at the event which included an opening speech by BBC The One Show's garden expert Christine Walkden, stalls by local food producers and guided walks around the park with local herbalists. Local group Incredible Edible who have planted a community garden next to the herb patch did a great job organising the event, you can see what they do and how you can get involved with them here. The garden is looking great, and you can now buy a DIY medicinal herb kit for £1 from the museum shop, which invites you to go and pick the herbs for yourself. We are so pleased with the response we are busy planning another event in October, more details as it is confirmed!

I think one of the highlights will be the guided walks by local herbalists Tim and Tracey who they will take you around the park to pick wild plants and then, working in the museum, they will show you how to turn them into an ointment. Another date for your diaries...July 20th, we will be launching the medicinal herb garden at Rossendale Museum, planted by artists Kaspar Wimberley and Susanne Kudielka as part of the work they were doing with the New Light on Old Bones project. The garden will have a joint launch with local group Incredible Edible who are opening a community garden project that they have planted in the museum gardens. There will be lots to do from activities with local herbalists to meeting local food proucers and generally having a nice picnic! I'll post more details closer to the time...

This Sunday from 12-4pm there is a celebration picnic (bring your own spread!) being held at Haworth Art Gallery. If the weather is fine (fingers crossed) we'll be in the gardens, if not we'll be in the house. Artist Becky Waite will be running her final workshops and inviting everyone to celebrate with her by decorating the trees in the park with the kaleidoscope installation she has been developing over the past month. You can also take the opportunity to see the new Stuart Haygarth piece commissioned for the gallery that inspired Becky's workshops, all in all a perfect day out!

The work that artists Steve Manthorp and Shanaz Gulzar have been developing with the North West Sound Archive (housed at Clitheroe Castle) was launched last Friday. We are very excited to see the QR tag trail around Clitheroe Castle grounds up and running, and have the QR tag jewellery for sale in the museum shops and also on line (only £3.95!). The soungem website gives a full background to the project and a chance to sample the sound clips. If you are in the Clitheroe area, drop into either the Castle shop or Platform Gallery to pick up a free sound gems trail map to take part.

We now have the outline of what the first piece of work will be at Towneley Hall as part of Grennan & Sperandio's series of works reflecting on the relationship between the collections at Towneley Hall and the social networks of Burnley town centre.

'Hammerton Street Saturday Night’ places five dirty 19th century glass dome vitrines on top of a light box showing green light, custom-made in Burnley by B&J Signs.
The work evokes the aesthetic and the experience of Burnley’s bar and club culture. The vitrines, from Towneley's neolithic artefacts store room, replace both bottles of liquor in behind-the-bar displays and stand in for people crowded at the bar itself. The green glow and electric blue facia belong to this aesthetic, experienced weekly around Hammerton Street in clubs and bars such as Lava and Ignite, Fusion, Tabu and the Iron Works. However, the vitrines belong entirely to a culture of domestic display, now ‘either antique’ or overlooked. They reside in junk shops, back rooms and museum stores. Light enlivens the vitrine’s coat of grime, making their condition intentional and visible. It anthropomorphises them, and they become curious participants in a small Saturday night drama.

Going on display in the Burnley Room at Towneley on the 20th of May. I'm very intrigued to see how this first piece will look...

Fish and chips...

We launched the fish and chip shop community newspaper on Friday in the rain - there's nothing quite like chips in the rain! Susanne and Kaspar have been working with the communities of Rossendale to develop these papers, asking questions about how people relate to nature in modern society. Many of specimens in the collections at the museum are there because of how the Victorians liked to collect natural history and their fascination with the outdoors - we were interested to see how people relate to this subject now. The first paper, entitled 'dust never hurt anyone' was developed by the lads at Belmount School, and their workshops were based around their allotments, and building structures out of what they found there. One of my favourite extracts from the first newspaper:
"I like bugs - because they have to defend themselves against bigger creatures"

Some of the lads from Belmount school who designed the first paper came down to pose for the cameras.

The are 500 copies of each newspaper edition being used at Tony's fish and chip shop in Rawtenstall and there are 6 editions, with each one being released on the first of the month.

The Victorian medicinal herb garden...

Yesterday saw artists Kaspar and Susanne working with the students of Alder Grange School to plant up the Victorian medicinal herb garden in the grounds of Rossendale Museum. Inspired by the books housed at the museum outlining cures for ailments (which I could do with testing out today as I'm sat here with a stinking cold!), they have developed a herb garden that will be the source of inspiration for activities in the summer when the plants have had time to bed in.

I'm looking forward to the launch of the community newspaper tomorrow that will be used to wrap up fish and chips at Tony's Fresh Fishmongers in Rawtenstall. We'll all be there at 11.30 to see the first edition launched if you need an excuse to have fish and chips for you dinner!

We are very please to announce that we have recruited two local artists, Becky Waite and Sarah Lawton to deliver workshops at the Haworth Art Gallery and Blackburn Museum and Arts Gallery respectively. Their work with compliment the commissions being undertaken by Stuart Haygarth and Timorous Beasties. We have yet to pin down all the details but they will be running a programme of workshops which will give people the chance to connect with the collections of the venues and the commissions in a new and creative way. They will also be hosting sessions for the Museums at Night campaign, should be good!

Just come back from a very exciting meeting with artists Steve Manthorpe and Shanaz Gulzar at the NWSA. They have developed some jewellery for the museum shops from QR tags so that a wider audience will be able to access the 'gems' of sound files stored there (QR tags for the uninitiated, as I was until a few weeks ago, are the small square tags like barcodes that you see on packaging, and when you take a photo on your phone they open up as sound, film or picture files). They are also planning a QR tag trail for around Clitheroe Castle grounds in May. All of this work is in development, but below is a sneak preview of what the jewellery will look like...

There will be interesting things happening at Rossendale Museum this Sunday and Monday while the museum is closed. Objects from the taxidermy collection will be temporarily liberated from their displays to under go an x-ray. Britain's most prolific taxidermy authority, expert Pat Morris (more info here and here) will be working with artist Kaspar Wimberely and Susanne Kudielka, who are on their final month long visit to Rossendale, to find out what secrets are hidden inside the stuffed animals. We are hoping that the process will reveal how the animals were stuffed and the structures inside, as well as telling us abut the techniques people used. A selection of the resulting x-rays will be presented on light boxes as part of the 'New Light on Old Bones' redisplay of the natural history collection at Rossendale Museum.

So now we are moving forward with the commissions in each of the five areas, our train of thought has come round to the best way of letting people know what is happening. We have a variety of planned publicity up our sleeve, but we suddenly had a moment of doubt yesterday over what we have been naming the work. Since the idea was conceived we have been referring to it, as the name of this blog indicates, as 'The Spring Programme'. However with a a whole of host of galleries and theatres 'spring programmes' arriving on our doorstep, we began to think this might not have been the brightest idea. So back to the drawing board we go. We need a title that will link the very different work together. The main links are that all the work is in response to some of the impressive heritage collections that the venues house, and we would like to encourage more people to visit to discover what we have on offer in Pennine Lancs. So far the idea we like most is Rediscover - its simple and we can use it in a variety of different ways. We'd be very happy to hear your thoughts and opinions on this - get in touch!

Creativity Works background:

Creativity Works is a consortium consisting of Pennine Lancashire Arts Officers, Arts Council North West, Lancashire County Council, Creative Lancashire, Elevate and Curious Minds. The partnership provides the infrastructure for joint working, shared approaches, economies of scale working across the sub region and alignment to the Multi Area Agreement as well as districts Local Area Agreement’s.

Creativity Works was initially set up in 2000, supporting Creative Industries in Pennine Lancashire. In 2008 it extended its remit to work strategically on four priority areas: Health, Business, Regeneration and People, to raise the profile of and participation in, quality arts practice in the region.

The engagement programme of work that this project belongs to, began in September 2009. The aim of this work is to increase engagement in the arts through working with local heritage venues. This project leads on from the success of the Open Shop Project that took place in August 2010

Project background:

The Open Shop Project that formed the first phase of this programme worked with an artist to use an empty shop space in Accrington market to engage a new audience with arts and the Haworth. The second phase of this work aims to use the Haworth collections in unexpected ways to encourage a new audience to visit the gallery. We are working with artist Stuart Haygarth to develop a new piece of site specific work to be situated in the Gallery, taking its influence from the Tiffany glass collection. We are looking for an artist, ideally local to the area or to Lancashire, to deliver a programme of engagement workshops alongside the work Stuart Haygarth is producing. We would like to engage people in creative activity at the gallery, influenced by the Tiffany glass collections informing Stuart’s new work, to give the community a chance to experience the collections in a different way. We would like to attract a new audience to the museum whilst offering its existing audience new ways of connecting with it. The workshops will take place before and during the time the work is exhibited. The artists will be responsible for engaging the community as well as existing groups (this may mean doing outreach sessions), designing, planning and delivering the workshops.

Aims:

To increase engagement in the arts in Hyndburn

To work with the community and local voluntary groups to engage the local people with the collections of the Haworth
To use the gallery as a venue for arts activity
To raise the profile of Haworth Art Gallery in the local community
To increase visitor figures to the gallery (as part of the bigger phase two project)
To encourage conversation and discussion.

Project brief:

To deliver a programme of artist workshops that will support the work being delivered by Stuart Haygarth in partnership with the Haworth Art Gallery. The artist will need to design, plan and deliver the programme making contacts with the community with support from gallery and Creativity Works staff. We would like the work to have a theme that innovatively compliments the Tiffany glass collection and Stuart’s work, whether that is glass design, collecting, reusing objects etc. The workshops can have an element of outreach sessions, but will mainly be delivered in the gallery. Communication of these workshops to the wider community will be an important element and the artist will be key in making these decisions.

Project Structure:

The workshops will take place in the month leading up to and during the exhibition around April –May 2011 (tbc).

10 half day sessions will take place through arrangement between the artist and the museum staff in this time. These will be a combination of drop in workshops and prearranged group workshops. One of these is to be an evening session for the Museums at Night event in May. Some sessions maybe held outside of the museum.

Included in the budget is provision for two half day planning sessions to be carried out before the programme starts

Towneley's project with artists Grennan and Sperandio is moving on swiftly. After a meeting this week is was decided that the best place for the series of temporary art works will be in the 'Burnley Room', and we have set a rolling time table from May '11to March '12 for the exhibition of these new works. The artists now need to spend time researching the collections and meeting the people of Burnley in preparation for the installation of the first piece in May. Below are a series of images of Grennan and Sperandios past works, needless to say we are very intrigued as to what form Towneley's work might take..

The CW website is now up to date with the up coming projects. Although it may appear to be quiet on this blog at the moment, we've been working away developing ideas with the artists. We have some really interesting ideas being developed and more meetings next week to progress them. I will post some snippets on here soon!

Rossendale artists looking for stories...

As the 'New Light on Old Bones' project gets well under way in Rossendale, artists Kaspar and Susanne are looking for people to talk to about their memories of the natural history collection at the museum. They have discovered some fascinating stories about the collection through newspaper archives, apparently the polar bear is named Phyllis and was quite a celebrity when she came to the museum. As part of their research, and potentially for new audio in the museum, they need to collect the communities memories of the collection. Below is the press release that has gone out to the local press. There are all sorts of exciting possibilities being discussed at the moment, but I will update on these soon

Press release - Do you remember Nellie’ the elephant?Creativity Works would like you to share your memories and stories of the animals at Rossendale Museum. As part of a project called ‘New Light on Old Bones’ Rossendale Museum are working to reinterpret the fantastic natural history collection that the museum houses. Working as part of the research team, international artists Kaspar Wimberley and Susanne Kudielka are collecting stories from the Rossendale community to record and use as research and for new audio displays in the museum. Whether you visited the museum as a child, bring your grandchildren now or are a taxidermy enthusiast, Kaspar and Susanne would love to hear your stories of the museum. Do you remember ‘Nellie’ the elephant or ‘Phyllis’ the polar bear, or do you just like spending time in the natural history room, they want to hear all your stories!

The project, which will finish in March, will offer a new way to look at the museums’ collections whilst preserving the atmospheric environment that makes the natural history room such a memorable place to visit.

Hello and welcome to our new blog that will track the projects that will make up the Spring Programme for the CW engagement work.
